A number of changes to the Student Grant Scheme have been announced for 2024 so it’s worth checking your eligibility for the upcoming year.
Holiday Earnings
The amount a student can earn outside term time has increased from €6,552 to €7,925.
Known as Holiday Earnings, this is income earned from employment outside term time within the previous calendar year by an applicant who was in education.
Maintenance Grants
Postgraduate Maintenance Grants
As announced in Budget 2024, maintenance grants have been reintroduced for eligible postgraduate students. Check out the grant rates and income thresholds on our postgraduate page.
Increases to Maintenance Grants
Maintenance grant rates have increased for eligible PLC, undergraduate and postgraduate students. Full details of all grant rates and income thresholds for the 2024 academic year can be found on our income page.
Income Thresholds
The income thresholds for the Band 4 Maintenance and the 100% Student Contribution grant have increased as outlined below.

Special Rate
A Special Rate of maintenance grant is available for eligible students. To be eligible for this rate of grant, the student must be eligible for the ordinary rate of grant and their total household income for grant assessment purposes must:
- fall below a specific threshold and
- include an eligible long term Department of Social Protection payment as prescribed in the Student Grant Scheme 2024.
For academic year 24/25, the Special Rate income thresholds have increased as outlined below.

Nationality Criteria
The nationality criteria has been expanded to include applicants whose permission to reside in the State was granted in accordance with the International Protection Regularisation Scheme.
Income Disregards
Additional income disregards have been included in the Student Grant Scheme 2024. Income disregards are excluded from the income calculation for grant assessment purposes. New income disregards include the Mother and Baby Institutions Payment Scheme, Tusla Bursary for Social Care Workers and Co-op Housing Scholarship.
