Once-Off Cost of Living Measures

Who will benefit?

Students who have been awarded a maintenance grant for academic year 2022/23 will receive this payment including PLC, undergraduate and postgraduate students who receive the Special Rate of grant.

Students receiving support towards their fees only are not included in this measure.

How much extra will eligible students receive?

As outlined in the table below, students will receive a once-off payment equivalent to one monthly maintenance grant payment at 2022 levels.

When will eligible students receive the payment?

The once-off payment is due to be paid to all eligible students by the end of December 2022.

Who will benefit?

Postgraduate students who have been awarded a postgraduate fee contribution grant.

Postgraduate students who receive the Special Rate of grant and a fee contribution of up to €6,270 are not included in this measure.

How much extra will eligible students receive?

Eligible students will receive an additional €1,000 towards their postgraduate fee contribution grant.

When will eligible students receive this payment?

SUSI will pay the higher amount directly to the student’s college.

Who will benefit?

All higher education students eligible for the free fees initiative.

How much extra will students receive?

SUSI will pay the applicable rate to colleges on behalf of students who have been awarded 100% student contribution.

For students awarded 50% student contribution, the reduction will mean that the balance they pay to their college will be €1,000 (a reduction of €500) for the 2022/23 academic year.

Who will benefit?

All maintenance grant holders.

How much extra will eligible students receive?

From January 2023, the Special Rate and Band 1 maintenance grant rates will increase by 14% and all other maintenance grant rates will increase by 10%.

Students in the current academic year will see their grant payments in respect of January to May 2023 increase proportionately once this measure comes into effect in January 2023.

These increases will not be backdated to the start of the 2022/23 academic year.

When will eligible students receive the increased payment?

This increase will begin on an annualised basis from January 2023 in respect of payments for January to May 2023.

Other Budget 2023 Measures

Official changes will be made to the Student Grant Scheme 2023.

  1. Increase in income limit from €55,240 to €62,000 for the 50% student contribution grant 
  2. New student contribution grant of €500 for incomes between €62,000 and €100,000
  3. Increase the postgraduate fee grant by €500 on 2022 levels from €3,500 to €4,000
  4. Reducing eligibility for second chance mature students from 5 to 3 years under the Student Grant Scheme
  5. Exclusion of rental income earned under Rent-a-Room Relief Scheme from reckonable income
  6. Increase in student earnings outside of term time from €4,500 to €6,552
