Budget 2026

A number of measures announced in Budget 2026 will result in changes to student funding.

Changes relating to the non-adjacent maintenance grant rates and postgraduate fee contribution grant will come into effect in January 2026 and other measures will apply from September 2026.

All measures are subject to legislation provided by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.

Who will benefit?

All non-adjacent maintenance grant holders studying PLC, undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

How much extra will eligible students receive?

The total increase to each grant rate are as follows:

When will eligible students receive the increased payment?

This pro rata increase will begin from January 2026 in respect of payments for January to May 2026.

Who will benefit?

Postgraduate students who have been awarded a postgraduate fee contribution grant.

Postgraduate students who receive the Special Rate of grant and a fee contribution of up to €6,270 are not included in this measure.

 

How much extra will eligible students receive?

Eligible students will receive an additional €500 towards their postgraduate fee contribution grant.

 

When will eligible students receive this payment?

SUSI will pay the higher amount directly to the student’s college.

When will eligible students receive this payment?

The increase will take effect from the start of academic year 2026/27.

What is the new threshold for the Special Rate of grant?

The income threshold for the Special Rate of grant will increase from €27,400 to €28,600.

 

When will the increase take effect?

The increase will take effect from the start of academic year 2026/27.

Who will benefit?

Eligible undergraduate students whose reckonable household income is under €120,000.

 

When will this take effect?

The increase will take effect from the start of academic year 2026/27.

What does this mean?

Constant Attendance Allowance will not be included when calculating a household’s total reckonable income.

Disablement Benefit paid to the applicant will not be included when calculating a household’s total reckonable income.
